Explorer trivia
Origin of birth | In early 1953, Rolex provided a white dial model to a British team of mountaineers aiming to reach the summit of Mount Everest. At the same time, they also supplied a special model of the Oyster Perpetual, Ref. 6150, with a black dial, luminous indexes, and a triangular mark at the 12 o'clock position. These watches were equipped with uniquely shaped hour, minute, and second hands coated with luminous paint, and the British team was wearing one of the expedition watches as they took on the challenge of climbing Mount Everest. Then, at 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953. Rolex quickly became famous when mountaineers Hillary and Norgay reached the top of Mount Everest. Under these circumstances, the Explorer was introduced as a watch that could accurately tell the time even under harsh conditions. |

Rare model "ivory dial" | Among the 2nd generation Explorer II Ref.16550 and Ref.16570, the rare model with the ivory dial is the one that has become a hot topic in the vintage Rolex market. There are various theories, but this is a rare specimen whose white dial has deteriorated over time, and as the name suggests, it has a pale beige or cream-colored dial. This ivory dial is highly regarded by watch enthusiasts, and the darker the ivory color, the higher the price, and the purchase price for an example in good condition and with beautiful tanning can reach over 2 million yen. It may happen. |
